Sandwich, the first town on the Cape when you enter over the Sagamore Bridge, has much quaint history to offer any interested visitor. It is the home to several centuries old historical treasures - the elegant Dan'l Webster Inn, the Hoxie house, which is the oldest house on Cape Cod, and the Dexter Grist Mill, a working mill dating from 1654. The famous Sandwich Glass Museum has been displaying colorful and important native glass works since 1907.
Sandwich has several nice beaches, plus the added enjoyment that the Cape Cod Canal offers for children and adults alike. From the vantage point of the beach at the end of Town Neck Road, or the wharf at the end of Coast Guard Road, you can watch large ships, sailing vessels, and the occasional yacht travel through the canal's narrow passage on the way to or from Boston or points north.
Sandwich is also the northern starting point of the paved 7 mile dual Cape Cod Bike Paths thats runs alongside both sides of the length of the canal down to Buzzard's Bay. These paths, maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, are enjoyed by bike riders, rollerbladers, fishermen and walkers. They also offer another vantage point for watching traffic going through the canal.
Sandwich is home to my favorite childhood summer haunt - Peters Pond Park. This is a wonderful park for tent camping, but also offers RV and popup spaces, tepees, and cabins. Peters Pond has loads of things to do, but my favorites were always swimming in the pond and walking up to the "trading post" to get a cool treat.
If you enjoy a quiet town with a good variety of restaurants, lodging of all types, lots of history, and excellent outdoor recreational opportunities - then Sandwich will be sure to please you and your family.
